You've spent weeks (or months!) collecting data, running analyses, and writing your abstract. Congratulations! you've made it to the conference! But now comes another challenge:

How do you present your research in a way that people will actually remember? Whether you're preparing a scientific poster or an oral presentation for MCYR 2026, your goal isn't to fit everything you've done onto a slide or a poster. Your goal is much simpler: Tell a clear scientific story. A conference presentation should clearly communicate the key message of your research so others can understand your work, ask meaningful questions, and engage in discussion.

Scientific posters: Less is more

Imagine yourself walking through a conference hall or a busy poster session. Dozens of posters compete for your attention, and you probably decide within a few seconds whether to stop or keep walking. Your audience will do exactly the same with yours. A well-designed poster doesn't try to tell the whole story at once. Instead, it sparks curiosity, highlights the most important findings, and makes people want to ask you questions. The easier your poster is to scan and understand, the more likely people are to stop, engage, and remember your research.

Remember, your audience doesn't know your research project as well as you do. They haven't spent months running experiments or analysing data. Your job is to guide them through your research in a way that is easy to follow and enjoyable to listen to.

The best presentations have a simple storyline: What was the problem? What did you do? What did you discover? Why does it matter? If your audience can answer those four questions when you finish speaking, you've done your job!

Your slides should support your story, not compete with it. They are there to reinforce your message, illustrate your results, and help the audience follow your thinking. If people are busy reading long paragraphs on the screen, they're no longer listening to you.

Here are a few practical do's and don'ts to help your presentation leave a lasting impression.

Do:

  • Focus on one key idea per slide.
  • Use clear graphs, figures, and images instead of large blocks of text.
  • Explain your visuals rather than simply showing them.
  • Practice your presentation aloud and check your timing.
  • Speak to your audience, make eye contact, and let your enthusiasm for your research show.

Don't:

 The golden rule: Design your science for your audience

Whether you're presenting a poster or giving an oral presentation, remember that your audience is seeing your research for the very first time. They may work in your field or come from a completely different discipline. Either way, they only have a limited amount of time to understand the story you're telling.

A successful presentation isn't about including every experiment, every graph, or every detail you've generated throughout your research project. It's about making thoughtful choices. Ask yourself: What does my audience need to see first? Which figure best supports my message? Which details belong in the presentation, and which can wait until the discussion?

Good scientific communication is a balance. Your visuals should attract attention without becoming distracting. Your content should be scientifically rigorous without overwhelming the audience. Your narrative should guide people naturally from one idea to the next, helping them understand not only what you discovered, but why it matters.

When these elements work together, your research becomes easier to engage with, your message becomes more memorable, and the discussions that follow are often far more rewarding.

After all, the purpose of presenting at a conference is not to show everything you've done, it's to communicate the part of your work that will spark curiosity, inspire discussion, and encourage collaboration.

One final tip

Before your conference, ask someone outside your research group to look at your poster or presentation.

If they can answer these three questions after a few minutes, you're ready:

  • What problem does this research address?
  • What did you do?
  • Why are the results important?

If the answer is yes, you're not just presenting data, you're communicating science.
